A quick guide to everything on this site.

Communities

The site is organized into communities (shown as c/name), each with its own feed. Browse all of them from Communities in the top bar. Join a community to become a member, or create your own — you're automatically made its moderator. Right after registering, you'll be offered a one-time, skippable pick of a few popular communities to join immediately — this gives your personalized Hot feed something to work with right away instead of starting cold.

Posts, voting & comments

Inside a community you can submit a link post (a title plus a URL), a text post (a title plus a body), or an uploaded image or video (up to 10MB for images, 100MB for video) — any combination of these is fine too. Uploaded images and videos play inline, right on the post, the same way a YouTube link does. Every post and comment can be upvoted or downvoted — click the same arrow again to remove your vote, or the other arrow to switch it. Feeds can be sorted by hot (the default), new, or top (highest score). Comments can be nested as deep as you like by replying to a specific comment rather than the post itself.

You can edit your own post's text or comment's body at any time by clicking edit next to it (a post's title and link can't be changed after posting). An edited post or comment shows a small "(edited)" marker to everyone else.

📊 Polls

Any post can optionally include a poll — up to 6 options, open for a duration you choose (1, 3, or 7 days). You can pick or change your vote as often as you like until it closes, and results are always visible to everyone, whether or not you've voted. A poll's full results and voting live on the post's own permalink page; feed rows just show a compact "📊 Poll" link through to it.

📣 @mentions

Type @username in a comment to tag someone — start typing after the @ and a list of matching usernames pops up to pick from. The person you mention gets a notification through the bell icon, and their name becomes a link to their profile once posted. Mentioning yourself, or someone who'd already be notified anyway (e.g. because you're replying directly to their comment), doesn't send a second, redundant notification.

🙈 Spoiler tags

Wrap any part of a post or comment in ||double pipes|| to hide it as a spoiler — it renders as a blacked-out bar that reveals the text underneath once clicked.

🔞 Content warnings / NSFW

You can mark your own post as NSFW when submitting it, and a community's moderators can mark or unmark any post afterward. A marked post shows a plain "🔞 NSFW" badge next to its title — it isn't blurred or hidden — but by default it's excluded from the home feed, community and topic feeds, and search results for anyone who hasn't opted in. Turn "Show NSFW / content-warning posts in feeds and search" on from Settings to see them. Distinct from spoiler tags, which hide specific text within a post or comment rather than classifying the whole post.

😀 Emoji reactions

Beyond up/downvoting, you can react to any post or comment with an emoji — click the 😀+ button to search a full emoji picker and pick one, or click an existing reaction pill to add your own vote to it. Clicking a pill you've already reacted with removes your reaction; you can react with as many different emoji on the same post or comment as you like.

🔖 Saved posts & comments

Click 🔖 Bookmark under any post or comment to save it for later. Everything you've saved is collected on the Saved page (in the ☰ menu), split into saved posts and saved comments. Click the bookmark button again to remove it from your saved list.

🚫 Blocking

Click Block on someone's profile to stop seeing their posts in your feeds and stop them from messaging you (in either direction, even in a conversation you already had going). Click Unblock any time to reverse it.

📌 Rules & pinned posts

A community's moderators can publish a numbered list of rules, shown in a collapsible "Rules" section right on the community's page. They can also pin one post at a time to the top of the feed — the pinned post appears first under Hot, New, and Top alike, marked with a 📌, until a moderator unpins it or pins something else instead.

Flair

Some communities define flair — small colored tags like "Discussion" or "News" — that you can attach to a post when submitting it, if that community has any set up. Click a flair badge on a community's feed to filter to just posts with that tag, or "All" to clear the filter. Moderators manage a community's available flair and can change which flair a post carries after it's posted.

🔔 Notifications

The bell icon in the top bar shows you when someone comments on your post, replies to your comment, or when one of your posts/comments crosses a vote milestone (10, 50, 100, and so on). Click it for a quick recent list, or view all for the full history. Clicking a notification takes you straight to the post or comment it's about and marks it read; use "Mark all as read" to clear the rest at once.

✉️ Direct messages

Click "Message" on any user's profile to start a private, one-on-one conversation with them. New messages notify you the same way replies do, through the bell icon; click Messages in the menu to see all your conversations. If you'd rather not receive new conversations from other users, there's an opt-out under Settings — it only blocks new conversations from starting, not ones you're already in.

🔥 Hot sort & ranking weights

The default "Hot" sort blends a post's votes with how recently it was posted, so fresh, well-received posts rise to the top without new posts being buried instantly. Logged out, everyone sees the same ranking. Logged in, it's personalized: posts from communities you're a member of (or where you've upvoted often) get a boost, adopted posts get a small boost, and frequently-reposted links get a small penalty by default.

You can retune exactly how much each of those signals matters — or turn one off, or flip its direction — with the sliders under Settings.

Post details: domain, dates & descriptions

A link post shows its domain in parentheses after the title, e.g. "(example.com)", so you know where it goes before clicking. Every post shows how long ago it was posted ("3 hours ago", "5 days ago", and so on). If a post has a longer description — or is a YouTube video — click the 🗎 icon to expand it in place; YouTube videos play right there once expanded, without leaving the page.

🤖 Bot-imported content & adopting posts

Some posts are pulled in automatically from RSS feeds and other external sources rather than submitted by a person — these are marked with a 🤖 icon and credited to the source they came from instead of a user. Click the source's name to see everything it has posted and, if you're a moderator, edit how it's configured.

Any logged-in user can adopt a bot-imported post that nobody has claimed yet — this puts your name on it as if you'd submitted it yourself. It's first-come: once someone adopts a post, the option disappears for everyone else.

🔄 Reposts

If a link has been posted before anywhere on the site, later posts of it show a small 🔄dd/mm/yy badge with the date it was most recently posted. Click the badge to see every time that link has been posted, most recent first.

🔀 Cross-posting

On any post's permalink, "cross-post" lets you share it into another community you're a member of. It creates a genuinely new, independent post there (its own votes, comments, and score) — pre-filled with the same title, text, and link, which you can edit before posting. The new post shows a "cross-posted from c/…" badge linking back to the original.

Sharing a post elsewhere

When you paste a post's permalink into Twitter, Slack, Discord, or similar, it renders as a real preview card — the post's title, a short description, and its thumbnail image when it has one — instead of a bare link. This is automatic and needs no setup on your part.

📡 Community feeds

Every community page has a "📡 Feed" link — an Atom feed of its most recent posts, including each post's full text, that you can subscribe to in any feed reader to follow a community without visiting the site.

Search

Use the search box in the top bar to find posts and communities by keyword from anywhere on the site. Searching from inside a community's page also gives you the option to search just that community. Once you've searched, you can further narrow posts by author, when they were posted, and (inside a community that has any) flair.

🧭 Discover

The Discover page shows two lists: Trending communities (ranked by recent post/comment activity and new-member growth over the last week) and New communities (the most recently created). It's a way to find active or up-and-coming communities you wouldn't otherwise stumble onto by browsing the plain alphabetical Communities list.

Your account

Every user has a public profile (click your username in the top bar, or anyone else's name anywhere it appears) showing their posts, comments, and points. From Settings you can change your username, email, or password — each change requires re-entering your current password first, and changing your email requires clicking a confirmation link sent to the new address before it takes effect. Forgot your password? Use the "Forgot your password?" link on the login page to reset it by email.

🖼️ Avatars, banners & bio

Upload a profile picture and a profile banner, and write a short bio, from Settings. Your avatar is square-cropped automatically and shows everywhere your username appears — the nav bar, post and comment bylines, the mod log, member lists, messages, and more. Avatars/icons need to be at least 200×200 pixels (up to 2MB); banners at least 600×200 pixels (up to 5MB). Any moderator of a community can upload its icon and banner from a "Change icon / banner / accent color" panel on the community page.

🎨 Community accent color

Any moderator can give a community its own accent color — Blue, Purple, Rose, Amber, Teal, or Slate — from the same "Change icon / banner / accent color" panel. It colors that community's own Join/Submit-post buttons and the active sort tab, so different communities can feel visually distinct from one another. It only applies on that community's own page, not to its posts when they show up in the home feed or elsewhere.

Points

Your profile shows two points totals — post points and comment points — added up from the votes your posts and comments have received. If something of yours is removed by a moderator, its points stop counting until (and unless) it's restored. Don't want your profile visible to others at all? Turn on "Make my profile private" in Settings to hide your posts, comments, and points from everyone but you.

🏆 Awards

Give someone's post or comment an award to spend 5 of your own points as a direct show of recognition — the points transfer straight to them, added to their own award-points total. You can't award your own content, and awarding is anonymous: only a running count is shown, not who gave it.

Moderation

Community moderators can remove posts or comments that break the rules (shown as "[removed]" to everyone, rather than deleted outright) and manage members, including banning disruptive users. If you don't see a "remove" option, you're not a moderator of that community.

Reporting

Click "report" on a post or comment (or "Report this user" on a profile) to flag it for review, picking a reason and adding optional details. Post and comment reports go to that community's moderators; user reports go to site admins. Reporting your own content isn't possible.

Mod log

Every community has a public "Mod log" (linked from the community page, visible to any member) recording every removal, restoration, promotion, demotion, ban, unban, and report decision a moderator makes — including their optional reason, when they gave one. It's a transparency record, not just an internal audit trail.

Dark mode

Use the 🌙/☀️ button in the top bar to switch between light and dark themes. It defaults to your system preference until you choose one explicitly, then remembers your choice.

Fair use

To keep things running smoothly for everyone, actions like posting, commenting, and voting are limited to a reasonable rate. If you hit a limit, you'll see a message asking you to slow down and try again shortly.

Site pages

Pages like About, Terms, or Privacy (if published) are linked at the bottom of every page in the site footer.

🔐 Two-factor authentication

Add a second login step from your account settings: scan a QR code with an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy), and you'll be asked for a 6-digit code each time you log in, in addition to your password. You'll also get a set of one-time backup codes in case you lose access to your app — save them somewhere safe. Admin accounts are required to have this turned on.

📧 Email digest

Turn on a daily or weekly email in your account settings with the top posts from your communities (or sitewide, if you haven't joined any). Off by default — nothing is sent unless you opt in.

🍪 Cookies

A banner on first visit explains the cookies we use (session, an optional "remember me" login cookie, and a security cookie that protects forms) and links to our Privacy Policy. Accepting or rejecting is remembered on your browser; rejecting hides the "remember me" checkbox at login. You can change your choice anytime via the "Cookie preferences" link in the footer.
